State’s attorney discusses COVID-19, sublease, courthouse closing

The board of Lyman County Commissioners met in special session in the conference room of the Lyman County Courthouse at Kennebec on Thursday, March 19.
State’s Attorney Steve Smith presented data regarding the current statistics of the COVID-19 pandemic. The current concern is to lower the rate of illness to help ease the strain on the medical field. The State of South Dakota has declared a State of Emergency.
Judge Bobbi Rank stated any action taken at the county level must still allow the court system to run as prescribed by the State Chief Justice.
The commissioners voted to take extra steps to limit the exposure of employees and county residents and issued a notice, which read, “Due to public health concerns, the Lyman County Courthouse and all county facilities are temporarily closing to the public as of 4:30 p.m. on March 19, 2020. We have decided to lock the doors at the courthouse to limit the exposure of employees and county residents. The majority of the transactions that need to be completed can be done over the phone, through a drop box or through the mail. Please call the appropriate office and they will be more than happy to help you with whatever you need. We
apologize for the inconvenience this causes but hope we can all work together to get through this with as little disruption as possible. Court proceedings will continue as scheduled. Please contact the clerk of courts for more specific information.”
