Harry Haanen was recognized by the South East South Dakota Conference and presented with a plaque for his years of service, inducting him into the SESD Hall of Fame. Chamberlain School Activities Director Bill Kurtz, left, presented the plaque to Haanen
during halftime of the Chamberlain boys basketball game versus Wagner on Friday, Feb. 14. The plaque read, “Harry Haanen taught in Wood, White River and Chamberlain districts for 35 years. As the activities director in Chamberlain, he was instrumental in having Chamberlain join the SESD. During his 28 years in Chamberlain, Haanen served as a teacher, middle school principal, activities director, assistant boys basketball coach, seventh grade girls basketball coach and head football coach and 26 years as the head track coach. He was also a basketball, football and volleyball official, working three state nine-man football championships, working one State A Basketball Tournament and officiated over ten SESD volleyball tournaments. The building of friendships with students and athletes has been a very rewarding experience.”
