His Dad was a seasonal laborer, house mover in the summer and cut ice in the winter, His Mom was a seamstress. They didn’t have a lot. Most people in those days were in the same boat.
Dick attended elementary schools in Mitchell, SD, first at Litchfield School, then Whittier School and then at Longfellow School. He went on to junior high and senior high in Mitchell, SD, graduating in June of 1956.
He later attended a considerably number of months of technical training with the National Cash Register Company.
Dick served in the United States Navy for four years. He entered the United States Navy on June 13, 1956, and was honorably discharged on March 15, 1960. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Quonset Point,
Rhode Island, Norman, OK, and Jacksonville, Florida. His dream came true when he was transferred to Attack Squadron 195 and served on the Navy Aircraft Carrier, USS Bon Homme Richard. Dick was very proud to have served his country in this way.
While home on leave in June of 1958, Dick met a young lady at a party at Lake Mitchell in South Dakota – his future wife Miss Judy Barnhart.
They corresponded by mail until he returned to Mitchell, SD. Following his discharge, they courted for a year before being united in marriage on July 1, 1961, in San Gabriel, CA.
In February of 1961, Dick went to work for the National Cash Register Company in Santa Ana, CA. He was later transferred to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1969 and in 1973 transferred to Mitchell, SD.
Dick retired from the National Cash Register Company in 1993 and started his own business in 1994 with his friend, JJ.
