Richard ‘Dick’ Kenton

Mass of Christian Burial for Richard “Dick” Kenton, 82, of Mitchell, SD, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2020, at Holy Family Catholic Church of Mitchell, SD.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at Will Funeral Chapel of Mitchell, SD, with a wake service at 7 p.m.
Burial was at Calvary Cemetery of Mitchell, SD.
Richard “Dick” Kenton died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, at his home in Mitchell, SD, under hospice care, surrounded by his family.
Richard “Dick” Kenton was born March 5, 1938, at Mitchell, SD. He was number five of six children born to Russell and Katherine Kenton.
His Dad was a seasonal laborer, house mover in the summer and cut ice in the winter, His Mom was a seamstress. They didn’t have a lot. Most people in those days were in the same boat.
Dick attended elementary schools in Mitchell, SD, first at Litchfield School, then Whittier School and then at Longfellow School. He went on to junior high and senior high in Mitchell, SD, graduating in June of 1956.
He later attended a considerably number of months of technical training with the National Cash Register Company.
Dick served in the United States Navy for four years. He entered the United States Navy on June 13, 1956, and was honorably discharged on March 15, 1960. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Quonset Point,
Rhode Island, Norman, OK, and Jacksonville, Florida. His dream came true when he was transferred to Attack Squadron 195 and served on the Navy Aircraft Carrier, USS Bon Homme Richard. Dick was very proud to have served his country in this way.
While home on leave in June of 1958, Dick met a young lady at a party at Lake Mitchell in South Dakota – his future wife Miss Judy Barnhart.
They corresponded by mail until he returned to Mitchell, SD. Following his discharge, they courted for a year before being united in marriage on July 1, 1961, in San Gabriel, CA.
In February of 1961, Dick went to work for the National Cash Register Company in Santa Ana, CA. He was later transferred to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1969 and in 1973 transferred to Mitchell, SD.
Dick retired from the National Cash Register Company in 1993 and started his own business in 1994 with his friend, JJ.
He retired again in 2004.
Dick, having always worked with his hands, it was natural for him to take up hobbies like woodworking, stain glass art and even repairing and restoring mechanical clocks. He loved to remain busy and loved to find something to fix.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 59 years, Judy Kenton of Mitchell, SD; his children, Joe Kenton and wife, Mary Beth of Arvada CO, Dan Kenton of Mitchell, SD, Jerry Kenton of Mitchell, SD, Mary Tilberg and husband, Scott of Ethan, SD, Genevieve Weber and husband, Rick of Alexandria, SD, Ron Kenton and wife, Michelle of Fredricksberg, VA, and Zach Kenton and wife, Beth of Madison, SD; 20 grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a brother, Jim Kenton and wife, Carol of Ames, Iowa;
two brothers-in-law, Fuzz Smith of Bridgewater, SD, and Don Giese of Chamberlain, SD, and two sisters-in-law, Lulu Kenton of Green Lake, WI, and Judi Kenton of Carrollton, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Katherine Kenton; a granddaughter, Hannah Weber; two sisters, Phyliss Smith and Lois Griggs and two brothers, LeRoy Kenton and Jack Kenton.
Will Funeral Chapel of Mitchell, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
