Funeral services for Matilda (Tillie) Endres, 85, of Chamberlain, SD, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, at St. James Catholic Church of Chamberlain, SD.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, with a scripture/rosary service at 7 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church of Chamberlain, SD.
Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain, SD.
Matilda (Tillie) Endres died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020, at home in Chamberlain, SD, with all eight of her children by her side.
Matilda (Tillie) Endres was born March 23, 1935, at home in White Rock, SD, to Martin and Catherine Zapp.
She was the ninth of 12 children in the family.
She attended grade school and junior high in Woonsocket, SD. She graduated as salutatorian from Carthage High School of Carthage, SD, in 1953.
After high school, she attended business school in Huron, SD. She then started working at the Beadle County Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in Huron, SD.
She married Francis Endres in Huron, SD, on Jan. 9, 1956. This marriage was blessed with eight children. They moved to Mitchell, SD, in 1959 where they lived until they moved to Chamberlain, SD, in December of
1960.
Tillie worked at home while her family grew. She did daycare in her home for many years. Over the years, she sold both Avon and Tupperware.
She worked at Cozard Memorial Library from 1971 through 1981. She was recruited for that job by the head librarian at the time because she and her children spent so much time at the public library.
She worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Chamberlain, SD, until her retirement in 1997.
She didn’t stay in retirement for long. She worked at Anderson’s clothing store and then moved on to work at the KPLO Radio station office.
Tillie was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the St. James Altar Society, working weddings and funerals for many, many years.
She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and having coffee with friends. She was an avid walker and was often seen out walking.
She cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Kathy Edwards and husband, Frank of Wyoming, MN, Janice Endres of Fayetteville, NC, Betty Endres-Landry and husband, Jim of Columbia, SC, Gail Sieck of Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy Endres of Platte, SD, Mary Larson and husband, Lance of Sioux Falls, SD, Doug Endres of Lead, SD, and Holly Endres of Chamberlain, SD; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Edwards, Paul Edwards, Allison Edwards, Ryan Landry, Danielle (Sieck) Oliver, Christopher Larson, Max Larson, Charley Larson, Ivy Endres, Nicholas Endres and Paige Endres; two great grandchildren, Audrey Oliver and Theo Oliver; three sisters, Betty Redl and husband, Bruce of Sioux Falls, SD, Lottie Wilson of Reno, Nevada, and Joyce Johnson and husband, Edward of Kenosha, WI; a brother-in-law, Jim Endres of Pierre, SD; a sister-in-law, Betty Krull of Pierre, SD, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Endres; her parents, Martin and Catherine Zapp; a granddaughter, Sara Endres; her siblings, Katherine Senska, Martin Zapp, John Zapp, Arlene Becker, Leo Zapp, Clarence Zapp, Eugene Zapp and Tom Zapp and her in-laws, Vincent Endres and Viola Hall.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, will be in charge of arrangements.
