Funeral services for Leonard Charles Byington, Sr., Ohitika Wicasa “Brave Man,” 67, of Lower Brule, SD, were
held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at the Lower Brule Community Center of Lower Brule, SD.
Wake services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2020, and Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at the Lower Brule Community Center of Lower Brule, SD.
Leonard Charles Byington, Sr. died June 12, 2020, at Sanford Medical Center of Chamberlain, SD, at the age of 67.
Leonard Charles Byington, Sr. was born Oct. 18, 1952, at Fort Yates, ND, to Charles Warren Byington, Sr. and Josephine Charging Eagle.
At the age of eight, he moved to Rapid City, SD, with his mother.
On Sept. 25, 1975, Leonard met Sandy McCauley in Sioux Falls, SD.
They were united in marriage on Oct. 18, 1976.
They started making their home in Lower Brule, SD, in 1978.
To this union, seven children were born.
Leonard loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed sports, including football, basketball and softball.
Leonard became a born again Christian in 1983.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Sandy Byington of Lower Brule, SD; nine children, Quincy Byington, Sr. and wife, Crystal of Aberdeen, SD, Leaf Rooks and husband, Wes of Pierre, SD, Joy Flying Hawk of Yankton, SD, Leonard Byington, Jr. and wife, Brandee of Wood, SD, Echo Alfaro and children of Des Moines, Iowa, Swan Byington of Lower Brule, SD, Sky Byington and wife, Ashley of Bullhead, SD, Fon Byington of Pierre, SD, and Majestic Byington of Sioux Falls, SD; 53 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Galloway of Illinois, Laura Stephson of Minnesota and Darlene Speidel of Canada and a brother, Francis Byington, Sr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Warren Byington, Sr. and Josephine Charging Eagle; a sister and four brothers.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
