Funeral services for Kalvin Lee Johnson, Sr., 50, of Lower Brule, SD, were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, at the Lower Brule Community Center in Lower Brule, SD.
Wake services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020, and Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020, at the Lower Brule Community Center in Lower Brule, SD.
Burial was at Messiah Episcopal Cemetery of Iron Nation, SD.
Kalvin Lee Johnson, Sr. died Sept. 14, 2020, at Sanford Medical Center of Chamberlain, SD, at the age of 50.
Kalvin Lee Johnson, Sr. was born June 22, 1970, to Audrey Johnson and Cleveland Fallis.
He attended school in Flandreau, SD, and Lower Brule, SD. On May 31, 1991, Kalvin graduated from Lower Brule High School of Lower Brule, SD.
Kalvin began dating Lynette LaRoche while attending Lower Brule High School of Lower Brule, SD and to this union, four children were born Darius LaRoche†, Kevin Johnson, Kellie Johnson and Kezrai LaRoche.
Kalvin later began dating Margaret Eagle Star and to this union, two children were born – Kalvin Johnson, Jr. and Fayelee Johnson.
On July 21, 2011, he was united in marriage to Sharon Fire Cloud.
Kalvin was a jack of all trades, always taking opportunities as they came.
He worked for the Golden Buffalo Casino as a blackjack dealer and later as a security officer from 1993 until 1999. From 2000 until 2008, he worked as a wildland firefighter for the Lower Brule Agency of Lower Brule, SD.
During this time, he also worked at the Lower Brule Fitness Center. He attended the operating engineer apprenticeship program. Kalvin worked as a community security at Checkpoint #2.
Kalvin enjoyed life to the fullest. His favorite pastimes were playing poker, horseshoes, foosball and playing volleyball at family gatherings.
He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
He loved working as a home mechanic, always helping others.
He was also known for riding his “750 Virago” motorcycle.
Kalvin was genuine, humorous, competitive and helpful. He lived in his
truth. He took on life’s challenges with hope. However, one thing to remember about Kalvin, he was an exceptional father.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Kevin Johnson, Kellie Johnson, Kezrai LaRoche, Kalvin Johnson, Jr. and Fayelee Johnson; aunties, Marlene Crowe and Beverly Wilson; sisters, Crystal Johnson and Barb Neiss; nieces and nephews, Dion Middletent, Amanda Charger, Duane “Austin” Charger, Tashena LaRoche, Isiah Crow, Chenoa Grassrope, Natasha Grassrope and Cante Fallis; grandchildren, Eugene Johnson, Jr., Delante Charger, Malaya Charger, Aubrea Charger, Darius LaRoche, Raylius LaRoche, Anjalyn Grassrope, Anthony Charger, Kylo Charger, Brighten Crow, Hope Grassrope, Catherine Skunk, Kaison Grassrope, Noah Grassrope-Peterson, Kylar Wilson and Eli Crow and several other relatives
and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas Millard and Alvina Johnson; parents, Audrey Johnson and Cleveland Fallis; aunts, Faye Banks and Ramona Wilson-Johnson; sisters, Cathy Hay, Lynelle Fallis and Jacqueline Johnson; an uncle, Alvin Johnson, Sr. a brother, Tim Fallis; a son, Darius LaRoche and a granddaughter, Audrey St. Cloud.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
