Florence Mae ‘Patsy’ Marquez

Funeral services for Florence Mae “Patsy” Marquez, 77, of Pierre, SD, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at the Conkicaske Presbyterian Cemetery of Fort Thompson, SD, with burial to follow.
Florence Mae “Patsy” Marquez died July 9, 2020, at Mary House in Pierre, SD, at the age of 77.
Florence Mae “Patsy” Marquez, Wic̅anh́pi Wăste Win “Good Star Woman’ was born Jan. 29, 1943, at Fort
Thompson, SD, to Leon Kirkie, Sr. and Laura Mae Harrison.
She attended grade school and high school in Mitchell, SD. In the early 1960s, she moved to California.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Marquez on June 26, 1965. Together they raised their children and Patsy managed a See’s Candy Store in Simi Valley.
In 1993, she returned to Fort Thompson, SD, and began working for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. She later started working at the Crow Creek High School of Stephan, SD, which she did for many years.
In 2016, she moved to Pierre, SD, and lived out the remainder of her life.
Some of the greatest joys of her life were her children and extended family. She loved to take her grandchildren to powwows and taking them on the powwow trail.
She was a kind, caring, very gracious and a forgiving woman.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Kimberly “Kay-Kay” Robles, Leonard Leon Marquez, Joycetta Morris and Maria Golan; siblings, Elnita Rank, Richard Kirkie and Melby Kirkie and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Marquez; her parents, Leon Kirkie, Sr. and Laura Mae Harrison; a daughter, Mary Ellen; brothers, Leon Kirkie, Jr. and Ronald Kirkie, Sr. and sisters, Menia Kirkie Mann and Ivadell “Ivy” Kirkie Head.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
