Elvera Joan Driving Hawk
August 9, 1944 – October 10, 2020

Graveside services for Elvera Joan Driving Hawk, 76, of Lower Brule, SD, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at the Holy Name Episcopal Cemetery of Fort George, SD.
Elvera Joan Driving Hawk made her journey to the Spirit World on Oct. 10, 2020, at the age of 76, from the Avera Heart Hospital of Sioux Falls, SD. She had various health issues and was currently on dialysis due to diabetes.
Elvera Joan Diving Hawk was born Aug. 9, 1944, at Fort George, SD, to Louise (Widow) and Edward (Chase The Bear) Long Fox.
Born of this union were 13 children of which she was the seventh and last surviving sibling at the time of her death.
Beginning in 1949, she attended many various schools, St. Francis Indian School of St. Francis, SD, Brainerd Indian School of Brainerd, MN, and Pierre Indian Learning Center of Pierre, SD. In 2003, she received her human services degree from Lower Brule Community College of Lower Brule, SD.
In 1970, she met her husband, Ronald Jerry Driving Hawk and to this union, five children were born. Along with her husband, they raised two of their grandsons as their own – Elliott R. Driving Hawk and Patrick E.
“Charlie” Driving Hawk.
In her lifetime she resided in Fort George, SD; Pierre, SD; Kennebec, SD, and was currently 15 miles west of Lower Brule, SD.
Elvera was on the Lower Brule Sioux Tribal Council from 1990 through 1992. From then on, she was employed with the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe at various jobs until 2017.
Elvera loved spending time with all her family. She was a loving generous woman. She was respected and loved by many. She was proud of her Lakota culture.
Her favorite color was green and holiday was Christmas.
Before her health issues, she enjoyed taking walks, cooking, reading, collecting rocks/family keepsakes and watching classic TV shows.
She will be truly missed by all of her loved ones, relatives and friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, Ronalda J. Driving Hawk-St. Cloud and Richard, Patrick J. Driving Hawk, Sr. and Brandi, Jason Driving Hawk, Sr., Jennifer J. Driving Hawk-Howe and Deanna A. Driving Hawk; two special sons, Elliott R. Driving Hawk and Patrick E. “Charlie” Driving Hawk; 14 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Jerry Driving Hawk of 45 years after five years of his passing; her parents, Louise and Edward Long Fox and 12 brothers and sisters.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
