Eleanor Hanig

Funeral services for Eleanor Hanig, 97, of Winner, SD, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 325 Van Buren Street of Winner, SD.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Winner, SD.
Burial will follow at the Winner City Cemetery of Winner, SD.
Eleanor Hanig died peacefully on Oct. 3, 2020, at the Lake Andes Nursing Home of Lake Andes, SD.
Eleanor Hanig was born July 20, 1923, at Hamill, SD.
She and her husband, Donald grew up in Hamill, SD. Donald would tell you he fell in love with Eleanor when she was eight years old and he was ten.
Eleanor went to grade school in Hamill, SD, and graduated from Winner High School of Winner, SD.
Eleanor and Donald were married on Jan. 24, 1948 – 73 years and members of the Winner Catholic Church – Immaculate Conception of Winner, SD.
She made her life with her husband, Donald in Winner, SD.
Eleanor received her undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, SD, and became a school teacher.
She taught grade school in Winner, SD, for over 40 years. She taught multiple generations of students while there and was loved by all her “kids.”
Eleanor later obtained her PhD in administration and ended her career as the principal and administrative superintendent of the Carthage School District in Carthage, SD.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Dolores Smith of Winner, SD, and nephews, Steven Klima and wife, Debbie of Sturgis, SD, Mark Smith, Tim Smith and wife, Lori and Pat Smith and wife, June of Phoenix, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Donald Hanig; a brother, Louie Klima; a sister, Lavon Smith and her parents, Frank and Eva Klima.
Mason Funeral Home of Winner, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
