Edward Everett Howe, Jr.
November 11, 1936 - April 16, 2020

Due to the current threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, a private funeral service for Edward Everett Howe, Jr., 83, of Big Bend, SD, was held at the Howe Family Cemetery at Big Bend, SD.
Edward Everett Howe, Jr. died Thursday, April 16, 2020, at Avera Mary house in Pierre, SD.
Edward Everett Howe, Jr. was born Nov. 11, 1936, at Joe Creek of South Dakota to Edward Everett Howe, Sr. and Rose Marie (Sargeant) Howe.
His Dakota name was Ohitika Hoksida “Solider Boy.”
He was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters.
Edward graduated from Riggs High School of Pierre, SD, in 1954, shortly after, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.
Edward Jr. then enlisted in the United States Army. He traveled to various places and loved talking about all the places he visited during the war.
After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1964, he married, Mary Pretty Weasel and to this union, they had a son named Everette Howe.
Everette was an only child. Edward and his wife, Mary moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived for 13 years. Soon after his son’s passing, he moved back to the West Bend, SD, area. He began work as an alcohol and drug counselor at Pierre Indian Learning Center in Pierre, SD. During this time, he remained sober and was very proud of his sobriety.
He later met and married Bernice Shell Track-Howe in 1994.
Edward Howe, Jr. spent the remainder of his life in the Harrold, SD, and Pierre, SD, areas. He enjoyed taking polaroid pictures with everyone because “he wanted to always be remembered after he left.” He loved talking
about the “good ole days” and always wondered how everyone was doing and if they were okay, especially Lucilla Adrian. He would often have long conversations after he would complete his dialysis.
Ed was particularly proud of his grandson, Daniel Howe, who is currently enlisted in the Marine Corps.
Ed had many Marine Corps and Army accomplishments and he will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his son, Everette Howe; his wives, Mary Pretty Weasel and Bernice Shell Track-Howe; his parents, Edward, Sr. and Rose Howe; a brother, John S. Howe, Sr. and his nephews, John S. Howe, Jr. and Travis Howe.
