​Funeral mass for Barbara Anne Blaine, 63, of Fort Thompson, SD, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Fort Thompson, SD.
A wake service was held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Fort Thompson, SD. The procession from Luze Funeral Home of Highmore, SD, started at 4 p.m.
Burial was at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery of Fort Thompson, SD.
Barbara Anne Blaine went to be with her Lord on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, from Sanford University of South Dakota Medical Center of Sioux Falls, SD.
Barbara Anne Blaine was born Jan. 2, 1957, at Fort Yates, ND, to Rudolph Vincent and Elizabeth Marie (His Chase) St. John.
She attended school at Pierre Indian Learning Center of Pierre, SD. She later received her GED and attended college at St. Mary’s College, Lower Brule Community College of Lower Brule, SD, the University of South
Dakota at Vermillion and Sinte Gleska.
Barbara chose her life partner, Nelson Raymond Blaine, Jr. and they began living together on April 21, 1977 and were married by the justice of the peace on March 14, 1978. Their marriage was blessed at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church of Fort Thompson, SD, on March 14, 1983.
The couple was blessed with ten children, Suzanne, Serina, Desiree, Barnabas, Nelson III, Delta, Mark, Solomon, Jarelle and Kolby. The couple raised four grandchildren from Suzanne, who died in 2005 and three grandchildren from Serina, who died in 2015. Barbara and Nelson had Kolby Stuffen since 2010.
Barbara was a homemaker. She was a very loving and caring mother. She raised her children, grandchildren and briefly raised nieces and nephews of various family members when needed.
She had a big heart and wore it on her sleeve.
Later Barbara worked as a head start teacher and a case management worker for head start.
Barbara and Nelson received a plaque from the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe recognizing them as foster parents and helping the future of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.
Barbara and Nelson were team leaders for Sister Charles Marriage Encounter Weekend since the mid-1980s to the late 1990s.
Barbara was one of a kind she could bring a smile to anyone’s face. She was friendly. She liked to joke around. She was a very good listener. She never had anything negative to say about anyone. She always looked at the bright side of things. She stayed positive. Though she was in lots of pain, she never led anyone to believe it. She never complained of her pain. She dealt with it, handled it well and lived her life.

(Stengel) Blaine of Fort Thompson, SD, Solomon (His Law) Blaine of Vermillion, SD, Jarelle (His Law) Blaine of Springfield, SD, and Kolby (Stuffen) Blaine of Fort Thompson, SD; her grandchildren, Micah Blaine of Bismarck, ND, Jared Blaine of Oklahoma, Rain Blaine of Colorado, Julianne Blaine of Rapid City, SD, Vincent Brown of Fort Thompson, SD, Harriett Ross of Fort Thompson, SD, Chance Blaine of Fort Thompson,

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Pius His Chase and Rose (Black Tongue) His Chase; parents, Rudolph St. John and Elizabeth (His Chase) St. John; siblings, Lawrence St. John, Mary Lou St. John, Kathy (St. John) Hawk and Michael St. John; her daughters, Suzanne Blaine and Serina (Blaine) Ross; her sons, Barnabas Blaine and Nelson Blaine III and a grandchild, Winter Blaine.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore, SD, was in charge of arrangements.
