Memorial services for Arnold Marvin McGhee, 92, of Pukwana, SD, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD.
His ashes will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020, at St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery of Crow Creek, SD.
Arnold Marvin McGhee died Feb. 1, 2020, at Pierre, SD.
Arnold Marvin McGhee was born Aug. 21, 1927, at Old Fort Thompson, SD, to Frank and Mercy (McBride) McGhee.
He grew up in Crow Creek, SD, and graduated from Stephan Indian School of Stephan, SD.
Later, Arnold joined the United States Army. He attended basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and went on to receive additional training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was stationed in Germany for 15 months during the Korean War in 1951-1952 and served as corporal in the Fourth Infantry Division, Recon Company.
Arnold had one daughter from his first marriage, Jeanne (McGhee) May.
On June 24, 1978, Arnold was united in marriage to Shirley (Brei) McGhee in Albuquerque, NM. During his time in Albuquerque, NM, Arnold worked for Asplundh Tree Experts for 28 years in which he retired.
In 1986, Arnold and Shirley moved to Chamberlain, SD, where they both worked as dorm parents for St. Joseph’s Indian School of Chamberlain, SD, for eight years. They moved to Pukwana, SD, in 1991 and upon their retirement, Arnold and Shirley became entrepreneurs.
Arnold was an avid carpenter. He would spend his free time building various furniture pieces for their home.
Arnold loved spending time with family.
He also enjoyed Mexican food, apple fritters and a good cup of coffee.
Grateful for having shared his life are Hilda (McGhee) Longcrow, Hazel (McGhee) Olson, Helen (McGhee) Fuerst, Frank “Buzzy” McGhee, Jr., Leroy McGhee, Robert “Bumpy” McGhee, Richard Ross and several
nieces, nephews and relatives as well as honorary family members, Pete and Betty Trujillo of Albuquerque, NM, Danny Hohola of Albuquerque, NM, Linda Hantke of Pukwana, SD, Pamela Palmer of Pukwana, SD, John Lytle and wife, Jean of Denver, CO, Armond “Red” Olson and wife, JoAnne of Fort Thompson, SD, Linda Hawk of Pukwana, SD, Bryan and Bobbie Ziegler family of Pierre, SD, Bill Hannel and wife, Penny of Pukwana, SD, Wayne “Flookie” McGhee of Fort Thompson, SD, and all the family and friends who knew Arnold.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Brei) McGhee; a daughter, Jeanne (McGhee) May; his parents, Frank, Sr. and Mercy (McBride) McGhee; a sister, Ethel (McGhee) Miller; a brother, Vern McGhee, Sr. and
a sister, Della (McGhee) Lytle.
Hickey Funeral Chapel of Chamberlain, SD, will be in charge of arrangements.
