Members of the Lower Brule High School InvenTeam will present and demonstrate their first prototype for an invention idea that won a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT Program.
The demonstration will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the high school in Lower Brule.
The invention is a solar powered Bluetooth speaker and cell phone charger, called makȟa ȟotȟaŋiŋ. The invention is meant to be a permanent fixture at the Lower Brule outdoor basketball courts, allowing users to play music, charge their phones and even hear weather warnings when storms approach. This invention should help increase the use of the outdoor courts, hopefully als increasing physical activity and social connections among young people in Lower Brule.

Members of the Lower Brule High School InvenTeams Research Project include, from left, back, Shane GreyOwl, Jernell GreyOwl, Lazaya Estes, Heaven Grassrope, Esibelle Estes and Jasmine Jones and front, Jeshua Estes, Mykael Prado, Mashalynn Janis, Bariah LaRoche, Justina Grassrope, Alyssa Box and Caleigh Little.
